Does your automobile dimming rearview mirror look like a sickly lava lamp? Here's how to fix information technology.

My car dimming rearview mirror has not worked since I bought the machine nearly three years ago. I put some electrical tape over the bad spot, simply information technology just kept getting worse until I couldn't stand it anymore, and so I decided to fix information technology. Here'due south what information technology looked similar:

I talked to my local Volvo dealer to see how much information technology would toll for a replacement. $580 for the part (considering it has a figurer in it, believe it or non), $41 for programming (because it won't piece of work on my machine unless they programme it too), plus labor for a mechanic (considering I tin't change it myself). Total? $700 +.

I saw on some other form where a guy changed out simply the glass and information technology worked on his machine, so that's what I did on mine (thanks to Rick Skilful for his help). I ordered a used mirror from http://www.vandsautodismantlers.com, for $lxxx, so went to piece of work. With this method y'all don't need the dealer or the programming because yous proceed the calculator section and just change out the bad mirror glass.

Tools required: T-xxx Torx bit, jeweler's screwdriver, 10mm socket and wrench, needle-nosed pliers, heat gun, soldering iron, plastic putty knife.

To remove the old mirror from the car, outset disconnect the bombardment negative cable and wait ten minutes.

Utilize a small screwdriver to pry the rear of the centre trim down:

Pull the rear of the trim down and pivot information technology forward:

Push the 2 plastic comprehend retaining clips to the side:

And remove the comprehend:

Remove the two 10mm bolts belongings the mirror mount:

Now release the mirror and low-cal housing from the headlliner by turning the two rotary catches downward:

And pushing the half dozen clips toward the middle of the car:

Pull the footing connector loose:

And remove the housing from the headliner. Let it hang by the wiring.

Employ the T-30 Torx bit to remove the mirror retaining screw from the height of the mirror/low-cal housing. Be certain to hang on to the cone-shaped lockwasher:

Now the mirror will exist hanging from its wiring. Pry the back cover off the mirror:

Now remove the wiring retaining bound from the back of the mirror:

Use the jeweler'southward screwdriver to push up the catch on the wiring plug, and so push button it out the back of the mirror:

Y'all now take the mirror loose. Take it over to a workbench and remove the front cover by inserting the jeweler's screwdriver and depressing the catches along the seam at the following points:

And the embrace will come off with the estimator and mirror in information technology. Release the plastic clips belongings the photo sensor lath in the top of the front cover. Exist very careful non to break off the photo sensor from the back side of the lath or to put besides much stress on the ribbon wires. Remove the mirror/computer combo from the cover:

Unsolder the ii wires from the mirror glass at the posts every bit shown by the yellow arrows in the post-obit pic:

Repeat the separation steps for the junkyard mirror. Yous might want to mark the computer from your car and then that yous don't get it mixed upward the junkyard figurer since information technology won't work in your car.

A piece of double-sided tape holds the computer on the back of the mirror. Depict a line around the computer board on the junkyard mirror (the ane you're going to put in the car) so that yous tin position the calculator from your car on it correctly (if you don't, the light sensor for the front of the mirror won't line upwards correctly).

Practice this next part very carefully. You don't want to crack the calculator circuit lath! Now use your heat gun sparingly to heat the mirror and work the plastic putty knife between the glass and the reckoner circuit board. On the junkyard mirror I heated the estimator side and worked the putty knife in between the computer and the tape to preserve the tape every bit much equally possible. On the mirror from my automobile I heated the drinking glass side and worked the putty pocketknife in betwixt the record and the mirror to prevent oestrus damage to the computer. When I got them apart the record easily peeled off the dorsum of the computer.

Now heat the surface of the double-sided record on the adept mirror and stick your car computer board on it making sure that it fits inside the lines you drew before. Concur it down until the tape cools. Solder the mirror wires to the computer board prongs. Snap the photograph sensor board into the mirror encompass, insert the mirror/computer philharmonic into the cover, then snap the housing onto the cover.

Reassemble the car reversing the steps above. Don't forget to connect the ground wire and secure the ii rotary catches at the top of the mirror/low-cal housing. Reconnect the bombardment negative atomic number 82 and relish your "new" mirror. You only saved nearly $600.

I'll post this in the repair database.
